KUNST;
ON HISTORICITY AND POWER
ORATION NO.2; ON HISTORICITY AND POWER by KUNST, was the first installation from my program series entitled Town Squared, a bimonthly exhibition/event which invites Miami artists to reimagine the role art place in pubic spaces. Utilizing Coral Gables Museum’s 2000 square-foot plaza, artists are prompted to engage in site-specific installations, performances, and conversations with the streetscape and surrounding city.
Miami-based artist KUNST was the first artist commissioned to participate. KUNST, performing as their character Town Crier, presented a series of vignettes which restaged watershed moments relevant to the history of Coral Gables and the museum site itself specifically in order to intervene within them with a critical approach. Themes of the performance included: the role architecture can play in dictating conformity and oppression to those who live within the built environment, the absurdities of inflated land capital, and police brutality.
